Getting the best photos on the day

Family Session Prep Guide

Thank you for choosing me to capture you and your loved ones. It is a privilege to be able to spend time with you and document the true essence of your family. As you can probably tell from my portfolio, I like to take true honest pictures that show exactly who you all are right now.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your session with me.

Location

Together we will decide on a location. I can offer suggestions or you can let me know if you have a particular place that is special to your family.

Time

I am a natural light photographer so the time of the day is extremely important. If it works for your family, shooting a few hours after sunrise or before sunset provides a beautiful light and atmosphere. We will discuss suitable times prior to your shoot as it will differ depending on the season.

Session length

I can get most of my pictures in the first 60 minutes, however if your family are happy to go for a short walk or have a play around our chosen location I love to stick around and capture more documentary style pictures. I am very led by the family and the mood of the children. I do not clock watch, my sessions are very relaxed, friendly and fun.

What should you wear?

I think it is important to be comfortable, but at the same time wear clothes that make you feel good about yourself. I do not recommend matching outfits, however coordinating does look very striking in the pictures. If you would like any help with your wardrobe please email me, I am happy to let you know what I think would work and what does not.
Please avoid very bright fluorescent colours, or blacks and whites as they stand out in the pictures and distract the eye. I would also recommend avoiding having words and logos on clothes.

Can I bring my dog(s)

Yes! please do. I love having dogs at my family sessions and will do my best to include them in as many pictures as possible.

Weather

I will check the weather in the run up to the shoot and consult with you. If it is raining we will have to reschedule. It is fine to continue to shoot if it is cloudy, and in fact the light tends to be more flattering in these conditions. I will contact you the day before the shoot to confirm all ok to proceed weather wise.
